SCIENCE INTENT, IMPLEMENTATION & IMPACT

INTENT

Science helps children to develop curiosity about the world around them and to Enjoy, Include and Achieve through exploration and discovery.

Our science curriculum inspires pupils to ask questions, investigate, and develop a deeper understanding of the natural and physical world. Children build secure scientific knowledge and understanding while developing the skills of enquiry, observation, prediction and analysis.

We aim for all pupils to:

  • Enjoy exploring and investigating the world around them.
  • Include everyone by ensuring all children can participate in practical investigations and scientific enquiry.
  • Achieve by developing secure scientific knowledge, vocabulary and enquiry skills.

IMPLEMENTATION

Science is taught through a carefully sequenced curriculum based on the Oak Academy Science Curriculum, ensuring clear progression in knowledge, skills and vocabulary from Reception to Year 4.

Pupils are taught through the strands of biology, chemistry and physics, with a strong emphasis on working scientifically. They learn to:

  • Ask scientific questions and plan simple investigations.
  • Observe, measure and record findings using a range of methods.
  • Predict outcomes and draw conclusions based on evidence.
  • Use scientific vocabulary accurately to explain their thinking.

Every class also engages in citizen science, contributing to real-world observations and developing an understanding of how science is used beyond the classroom.

Learning is practical and enquiry-based, with regular opportunities for hands-on investigation. Our rich school grounds are used as a key resource, supporting children to develop their understanding of science through direct observation of nature and seasonal change. We use nature as an inspiration for scientific enquiry, encouraging children to notice, question and explore the world around them.

Teaching is inclusive and adaptive, ensuring all pupils are supported and challenged to achieve. Vocabulary development is a key focus throughout all lessons.

IMPACT

By the end of Year 4, pupils have developed a secure understanding of key scientific concepts and the skills to carry out simple investigations confidently. They can ask questions, make predictions, carry out fair tests and explain their findings using appropriate scientific language.

Pupils leave The Queen Anne with curiosity about the world, a strong foundation in scientific knowledge and the confidence to continue their learning in science.
