Modern Foreign Languages (M.F.L)
M.F.L INTENT, IMPLEMENTATION & IMPACT
INTENT
We believe that learning a language opens doors to other cultures and helps children to Enjoy, Include and Achieve. Through our language curriculum, we aim to spark curiosity, build confidence and develop a positive attitude towards language learning.
Our curriculum introduces pupils to languages in a fun, engaging and practical way. Children develop early communication skills, gain an understanding of basic grammar structures and build vocabulary that allows them to express simple ideas, opinions and feelings.
We aim for all pupils to:
- Enjoy learning and using new languages.
- Include everyone by ensuring all children can access and succeed in language learning.
- Achieve by developing a foundation of vocabulary, pronunciation and basic grammar.
IMPLEMENTATION
French is taught through a carefully sequenced curriculum based on the Oak Academy French scheme, ensuring clear progression in knowledge, vocabulary and language skills from Reception to Year 4.
Pupils are taught to:
- Listen attentively and respond to spoken language.
- Speak in simple sentences using familiar vocabulary and phrases.
- Develop accurate pronunciation and intonation.
- Read and understand simple words and phrases.
- Write basic words and short sentences with increasing accuracy.
Lessons are practical, interactive and engaging, with a strong focus on speaking and listening. Pupils learn through songs, games, stories and conversation, helping to build confidence and enjoyment.
Teaching is inclusive and adaptive, ensuring all pupils are supported and challenged. Language learning is revisited regularly to support retention and confidence.
In Key Stage 2, pupils also learn Japanese, taught by a specialist Japanese teacher, with a focus on both language and culture. This provides children with a broader understanding of global languages, traditions and cultural awareness.
Where appropriate, links are made to culture and geography to help pupils understand the countries where French and Japanese are spoken.
IMPACT
By the end of Year 4, pupils have developed a secure foundation in basic French vocabulary and phrases, alongside an introductory understanding of Japanese language and culture. They can understand and respond to simple spoken and written language and can communicate basic ideas with increasing confidence.
Pupils leave The Queen Anne with a positive attitude towards language learning, curiosity about other cultures and the confidence to continue their study of languages in the future.
