HISTORY INTENT, IMPLEMENTATION & IMPACT
INTENT
At The Queen Anne, we believe that History helps children to Enjoy, Include and Achieve by developing curiosity about the past and understanding how it has shaped the world we live in today.
Our history curriculum inspires pupils to ask questions, think critically and develop a secure understanding of key events, people and periods in history. Children learn to make connections between different time periods and understand change, continuity, cause and consequence.
We aim for all pupils to:
- Enjoy exploring the past and discovering historical stories.
- Include everyone by ensuring all children can access and engage with historical learning.
- Achieve by developing secure historical knowledge, enquiry skills and vocabulary.
IMPLEMENTATION
History is taught through a carefully sequenced curriculum based on the Oak Academy History Curriculum, ensuring clear progression in knowledge, skills and vocabulary from Reception to Year 4.
Pupils are taught to:
- Develop an understanding of chronology and where people and events fit in time.
- Ask historical questions and use sources to find answers.
- Understand cause and consequence, similarity and difference, and change over time.
- Use historical vocabulary accurately to describe the past.
We are fortunate to be located on the edge of the Long Walk in Windsor, giving us easy access to Windsor and its rich historical resources. This provides valuable opportunities for real-life learning experiences that bring history to life.
Each year, pupils take part in visits to Windsor Castle, with learning carefully adapted for each year group. Experiences range from observing the castle from a boat in the Early Years to deeper exploration in Key Stage 2 of the role of the castle and its national and global significance.
We also make use of a wealth of hands-on artefacts and resources within school. These allow children to touch, handle and explore objects, helping them to develop a stronger understanding of historical time periods and make meaningful connections to the past.
Teaching is inclusive and adaptive, ensuring all pupils are supported and challenged to succeed. Vocabulary development is a key focus throughout all lessons.
IMPACT
By the end of Year 4, pupils have developed a secure understanding of key historical periods, events and individuals. They can ask and answer historical questions, use evidence to support their ideas and describe changes over time.
Pupils leave The Queen Anne with curiosity about the past, a developing sense of chronology, and a deepened understanding of how history has shaped both Windsor and the wider world.
