Design Technology ( D.T. )
INTENT
At The Queen Anne, we believe that Design and Technology helps children to become creative, practical problem-solvers. Through our vision of Enjoy, Include and Achieve, we inspire pupils to design, make and evaluate products that are purposeful, imaginative and relevant to their everyday lives.
Our curriculum encourages children to think like designers and engineers by exploring how things are made and how they can be improved. Pupils develop the confidence to take risks, solve problems and learn from evaluation and reflection.
We aim for all pupils to:
- Enjoy designing, making and testing their ideas.
- Include everyone by ensuring all children can access and succeed in practical, creative tasks.
- Achieve by developing knowledge and skills in designing, making and evaluating products.
IMPLEMENTATION
Design and Technology is taught through a structured and progressive curriculum, informed by the National Curriculum and supported by Oak Academy resources. Learning builds from Reception to Year 4, ensuring clear progression in designing, making, technical knowledge and evaluation.
Pupils are taught to:
- Design purposeful products based on clear criteria.
- Use a range of tools, materials and techniques safely and effectively.
- Build, join and combine materials to make functional products.
- Evaluate their work and the work of others to improve outcomes.
Children experience a range of DT contexts including structures, mechanisms, textiles, food and simple electrical systems. Learning is practical and hands-on, with opportunities to test, refine and improve their designs.
Teaching is inclusive and adaptive, ensuring all pupils are supported and challenged. Where possible, DT is linked to real-life problems and meaningful contexts, encouraging creativity and independence.
IMPACT
By the end of Year 4, pupils have developed the knowledge, skills and confidence to design, make and evaluate purposeful products. They can use tools and materials safely, explain their design choices and reflect on how their products could be improved.
Pupils leave The Queen Anne as confident, creative problem-solvers with a strong foundation in Design and Technology and an understanding of how design impacts the world around them.
